In the September 23, 2009, edition of USA Today they published a survey conducted by SnagAjob.com (http://bit.ly/DRsBG). The survey was entitled: What makes workers happy? According to the survey, 27% said, personal satisfaction defining who I am is what makes them the happiest and 12% said co-workers and clients. Apparently, it is all about me, not surprising I guess.

Boomers, Generations X, Y and Z and beyond, now is the time to be planning for your next adventure following retirement. I know some of you have a long way to go but the job market will have changed by the time you get there. Here are some things I believe you should do to be "ready" for retirement and possible reentry into the job market.

We like it when someone makes something out of nothing. TV shows like the A-Team, MacGyver and Food Network's Chopped were created using the idea that something can be created from nothing. However, if you have seen these TV shows you know that something was or is always created from something else. As far as I know only one person, (God) created something from nothing but that is not the subject of this blog.

In a Seinfeld episode, George Costanza's boss gives him an assignment while they are in the other conference room (men's room). As the final instruction is given, a toilet flushes causing George to miss the critical information. He tries to follow up but is unsuccessful. Panic ensues and George eventually passes the point where he can ask his boss for clarification. Thus, he is unable to complete the assignment putting an end to a very a promising career. However, this setback would not prevent him from founding Vandelay Industries.

We have all witnessed someone "lose it." As a kid, I would play in the playground at the neighborhood school just two blocks from home. In the fall, we played football, in the spring basketball, and in the summer baseball. I was very competitive and hated to lose. Good attributes except when the team I was on began to lose.

I am reading The Leadership Code by Ulrich, Smallwood and Sweetman. It is a great book and I recommend you pick it up if you would like to improve your leadership capabilities. The Leadership Code offers five rules to lead by.
